Although the Jodo Garden, where Ushiku Daibutsu (Great Buddha) is located, is a religious facility of the Jodo Shin sect of Buddhism, it can be enjoyable regardless of religion. There is includes a small animal park where you can interact with rabbits and goats, a 20,000-square-meter flower garden, a nakamise, a restaurant, and other facilities.

Ushiku Daibutsu was completed in 1993. Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism, used Ibaraki Prefecture, where the Ushiku Daibutsu is located, as a base for his missionary work in the Kanto region, which is why the Great Buddha was built here.

During the Nara period (710-794), many people put their efforts into building the Great Buddha in various places, hoping that he would save people suffering from major earthquakes and droughts and bring them a peaceful world.

Many Japanese people still visit the shrine to pray for peace and health.

He has a curious combination of a fluffy body and a trademark topknot.  His presence, which is out of place in Edo, stands out even from a distance, so if you see him, be sure to take a commemorative photo.  He is a popular figure, always surrounded by children.
