Travel point (2) Ouchi-juku
Ouchi-juku flourished in the Edo period (1603-1867) as a post town on an important road connecting Aizuwakamatsu City and Nikko Imaichi. Even today, houses with thatched roofs still stand along the road as they were in the Edo period, and in 1981, the area was designated as a national preservation district for important traditional buildings.
Point of Travel (3) Tsurugajo Castle
Tsurugajo Castle is said to be an impregnable castle that survived the onslaught of the new government forces during the Boshin War. The castle was rebuilt in September 1965, and in the spring of 2011, it became the only castle tower in Japan to be clad in tiles (red tiles) from the final days of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Travel point 4: Negi soba (green onion soba), a specialty of Ouchi-juku
For lunch, try Ouchi-juku's specialty, Negi Soba (green onion soba). You will eat it while biting a piece of green onion instead of chopsticks.
